Dear Consultee

Consultation on NILGOSC draft Disability Action Plan

NILGOSC is currently consulting on its draft Disability Action Plan.

This action plan has been prepared in response to the introduction of new disability duties on 1st January 2007.  Under Section 49A of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (DDA 1995) (as amended by Article 5 of the Disability Discrimination (Northern Ireland) Order 2006), NILGOSC is required when carrying out its functions to have due regard to the need to:

§         promote positive attitudes towards disabled people; and

§         encourage participation by disabled people in public life (‘the disability duties’).

The draft plan has been prepared in accordance with the guidance issued by the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland and it outlines how NILGOSC proposes to meet the new disability duties.

NILGOSC is keen to invite comments from any source and is particularly interested in hearing from disabled persons, representatives of and organisations for disabled people and those with a legitimate interest in the development, implementation and ongoing review of this plan.

A number of organisations will be specifically invited to comment and be involved in the development of the plan.  An advertisement will be placed in the press to allow individuals the opportunity to respond, the plan will also be placed on our website and will be issued to all our staff.

We will welcome comments on the draft plan in any format, a number of suggested ways are detailed below:

§         Completion of a questionnaire

§         By post, fax or email

§         Alternatively, if you would prefer to meet to discuss the plan then please contact me to arrange.
