Protected Manual Contributors

In the 2009/10 year, protected manual contributors who previously paid 5% had their contribution rate increased to 5.25% as part of a phased introduction of the new contribution bandings.

From 01/04/2010, these protected members were required to pay 5.5% contributions in line with the regulations as summarised in the table below.

Contribution rate applicable to the member’s pay range

 Pre-2009

Members contributed 6% of pay received for contractual hours.  If you had no contractual hours of employment, contributions were deducted on all the pay you received.

If you were employed as a ‘manual worker’ before 1st February 2003 and were either a member of the LGPS (NI) or had a right to be, you retained the right to contribute at 5%.  This right was retained while you remained employed as a manual worker without a break in employment of more than one month and one day.  A ‘manual worker’ was an employee whose duties were not mainly administrative, professional, technical or clerical.
