Employer Procedure for New Joiners

The table below shows the interaction between the LGPS (NI) and the Automatic Enrolment regime following an employer reaching its staging date and having carried out the initial assessment and automatic enrolment duties.

Immediately entered into the Scheme from his/her date of commencing employment             

Contractual enrolment



New employee – contract of less than three months’ duration but meets automatic enrolment threshold
Brought into the Scheme from his/her date of joining or the employer’s staging date if this is later

Automatic enrolment
New employee – contract of less than three months’ duration and does not meet automatic enrolment thresholds
Give employee the option of electing to join the Scheme and is brought into the Scheme from the first day of the next pay period after the date of election

Contractual enrolment
Existing employee who has opted out now chooses to join the Scheme
Brought into the Scheme from the first day of the next pay period after the date of election

Contractual enrolment

Employee with a contract of employment of less than three months who reaches three months in employment
Brought into the Scheme from the first day after three months employment has been completed
Contractual enrolment
Employee with a contract of employment of less than three months, whose contract is extended beyond three months before the initial contract has finished.
Brought into the Scheme from the first day of the next pay period following the extension of the contract.
